Ingredients
  

Bread Base
  • 6 cups day-old bread cut into 1-inch cubes
Apple Mixture
  • 3 apples peeled, cored, diced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
Custard
  • 4 eggs large
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; cook until tender. Set aside.
  3. Place bread cubes in a large mixing bowl.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  5. Fold apple mixture into bread cubes. Pour custard over bread and press lightly to submerge.
  6. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Cover loosely with foil and bake 35 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake 20–25 minutes more, until golden and set.
  8. Cool 10 minutes before serving. Top with caramel sauce, powdered sugar, or ice cream as desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add chopped nuts or a splash of bourbon to the custard.
