Ingredients
  

  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 1 apple thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp fresh thyme optional

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and salt; cook 20–25 minutes until caramelized.
  2. Add butter to skillet and sauté apple slices 3–5 minutes until tender.
  3. Butter one side of each bread slice. Place one slice butter-side down in skillet.
  4. Layer cheese, onions, apples, and more cheese. Top with remaining bread slice.
  5. Cook 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Notes

Cook on low heat to allow cheese to melt without burning the bread.
