Ingredients
  

Potato Topping
  • 2 lbs potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 0.33 cup milk or cream
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
Meat Filling
  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup peas frozen
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme dried or 1 tbsp fresh
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Method
 

  1. Boil potatoes until tender, drain, and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  2. Sauté onion and carrots in olive oil for 5 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
  4. Add ground lamb or beef and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Add broth and Worcestershire and simmer 5 minutes.
  7. Stir in peas and remove from heat.
  8. Spread filling into a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes.
  9. Bake at 400°F for 20–25 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Notes

Broil during the last 2–3 minutes for extra browning.
