Ingredients

Beef and Onions
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
Sauce
  • 0.75 cup beef broth
  • 1.5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp dried thyme
  • 0.75 tsp salt or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
For Serving
  • 4 brioche buns toasted
  • 4 slices provolone cheese

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet. Cook onions over medium-low heat until caramelized.
  2. Add garlic and cook briefly. Increase heat and brown ground beef.
  3. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
  4. Spoon beef mixture onto toasted buns, top with cheese, and broil until melted.

Notes

Caramelizing onions slowly creates the signature French onion flavor—do not rush this step.
