Cookies
  • 2.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 0.25 tsp almond extract optional
  • 3 tbsp milk
Buttercream Frosting
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk or cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • food coloring optional
  • Christmas sprinkles

Method
 

  1. Whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add egg, egg yolk, vanilla, and almond extract.
  4. Mix in dry ingredients, then add milk.
  5. Chill dough for 1 hour.
  6. Scoop dough, shape balls, and flatten slightly.
  7. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 9–11 minutes.
  8. Cool completely before frosting.
  9. Beat butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for frosting.
  10. Frost cookies and decorate with sprinkles.

Notes

Do not overbake to maintain soft texture.
